Kinesio® Taping Q&A

What is the Kinesio taping method?

The Kinesio taping method is used to cause physiological effects on many body systems. These affected systems can include the circulatory or lymphatic, neural, muscular, and fascial systems in addition to the joints. Kinesio Taping is presently being used by physical therapists at Omega Physical Therapy to alter muscle tone, circulate lymphatic fluids, improve movement patterns, and correct a person’s posture. The Kinesio Taping Method is a specialized method of applying Kinesio Tape in a special manner to create change in the different systems. Benefits associated with Kinesio taping include:

  • More economical over time than other treatments
  • Easy to learn about and apply
  • Fewer types of tape to master
  • Can be used over a longer period of time

How does it work?

When placed on the skin, Kinesio tape pulls the upper layers of skin and creates additional space between the dermis and the muscle. This space which is created is believed to alleviate pressure on the lymph spaces in the region between the muscle and the dermis. By doing this more space is created for lymph to flow and this creates better lymph drainage throughout the affected area. This area also houses several nerve receptors which send certain information to the person’s brain. When the area between the epidermis and the muscle is compacted, like that which can occur as a result of an injury, these nerve receptors are compressed and sending information to the brain associated with continuous touch, light touch, cold, pain, pressure, and heat are affected. This information causes the brain to send out particular signals on how the body will react to certain stimuli. Kinesio Tape changes the information which these receptors send to the brain and creates a less reactive response as a result. This allows the body to work more normally and removes some of the obstacles which can hinder or slow down the healing process.

How long will it last?

At the practice, Dr. Shestakovsky uses the innovative Rock Tape option. This option is unique and can be worn for up to 5 days. It can also be worn when swimming or in the shower.
