Sports Injury physical therapy at Omega Physical Therapy in Brooklyn, NY

Sports Injury

Sports can be very taxing on your body, no matter what you play. Our trusted staff will work with you to get to the root of your problem and help you feel better again. We help treat and also prevent injuries in the neck, back, shoulders, knees, and ankles. We are able to manually adjust your spine, relieving any pain that you are feeling. This will allow your body to function much better after the injury.

How This Works

How sports injury care works at Omega Physical Therapy

Sport loads the body in ways daily life does not, and a sports evaluation reflects that: as well as testing the injured area, it looks at the demand you are going back to. What the sport asks of you — sprinting, cutting, overhead work, contact, repeated impact — decides what the end of the plan has to look like before returning makes sense.

Omega Physical Therapy treats and also works to prevent injuries of the neck, back, shoulders, knees and ankles. Treatment is one-on-one with Dr. Dmitry Shestakovsky, DPT and combines manual therapy, including spinal manipulation where it is indicated, with progressive therapeutic rehabilitation. The published aim is to get to the root of the problem rather than to quieten the symptom and send you back into the same load that produced it.

What to Expect

One-on-One Care, Built Around You

The question a sports plan has to answer is not only "does it still hurt" but "will it hold up at the intensity you play at", so the plan is built backwards from that.

  1. Evaluation

The mechanism of injury, what you play and at what level, and a physical assessment of the injured area plus the joints above and below it. Where relevant, the spine is assessed too.

  2. Hands-on treatment

Manual and soft-tissue treatment of the injured region, and manual adjustment of the spine where the assessment calls for it, to address restriction that is limiting how you move.

  3. Your home program

Loading that starts where you are and steps up — mobility, then strength, then the speed, change of direction or overhead work your sport actually needs. Kinesio taping is sometimes used alongside it for support during activity.

  4. Follow-up and review

Progress is measured against the demands of your sport rather than against a calendar, and the program steps up as those markers are met.

Benefits

What sports injury care is used for

Physical therapy is individualized, and what any plan involves depends on your evaluation. These are the situations this kind of care is commonly used to address at our Brooklyn office.

  • Addressing sports injuries of the neck, back, shoulders, knees and ankles
  • Rebuilding strength, mobility and control in the injured region and the joints around it
  • Preparing the body for the specific demands of a sport before returning to it
  • Injury prevention work for athletes who train or compete regularly

Common Questions

Sports Injury FAQs

Can I keep training while I am being treated?

Often some form of training continues, modified around the injury, but that is a decision made after the evaluation and it depends entirely on what is injured. Bring your training and competition schedule to the first visit so it can be planned around.

When can I go back to playing?

Nobody can put a date on that before examining you, and a date would be the wrong measure anyway — return is judged on how the injured area handles the demands of your sport. Dr. Shestakovsky will set those markers with you and review them as you progress.

Do you treat injuries from an accident rather than sport?

Yes. The practice also provides care after a personal injury, an auto accident or a fall, and you may be eligible to receive injury rehabilitation in the form of physical therapy. Call (718) 996-9929 to talk through your situation.

What should I bring?

Your insurance card, photo ID, any imaging or referral you already have, and — if it is relevant to the injury — the footwear or brace you train in. New-patient forms can be printed and completed at home in advance.

Is it covered by my insurance?

Omega Physical Therapy welcomes insurance and will do everything it can to help you receive as many benefits from your plan as possible. Because there are so many different plans and coverage options, the office cannot give a definite answer in advance — a copy of your insurance card is taken at your appointment so your coverage can be estimated. Cash, checks, debit cards and most major credit cards are also accepted. Call (718) 996-9929 with your plan details and the front desk will talk it through with you.
